“It’s not like that.”

“Dad, you haven’t been with anyone for more than a week, and suddenly, at forty-eight, you decide this woman is the one.”

“She’s pregnant.”

“What the fuck?” I slam my fist against my desk. “And you didn’t learn the first time around?”

“It’s different.”

“Oh yeah, you married a woman you knocked up from a one-night-stand, and then you couldn’t stand each other, fighting until there was a bitter divorce.”

“Well, but I got you.”

“Are you even sure it’s your baby?”

“It’s too soon, and besides, she’s been with me nonstop. I’m not that naïve, Drake.”

“I don’t trust it.” I take the stairs one at a time toward my bedroom. “You don’t know this person.”

“If you’re worried about your inheritance, I have my will already prepared for you in it.”

“I’m not worried about my inheritance, father. I have my own money and, obviously, my own property. Although I can’t say how much you’ll have left after she’s done with you. I don’t approve of your selection. Especially because you had to hide her from me.”

“She was a single mother, and I was a single father. I don’t see the problem.”

“The problem is you didn’t research anything about her before you got her pregnant and married her.”

“You don’t investigate people before you date. That’s your problem. You have to take a leap sometimes.”

“You can get to know a person before you knock them up, you know.” I’m not even sure that’s true because I’ve never gotten close enough to a person to do it, but I’m sure you can. There’s got to be a woman worthy of that shit, but after my parents failed five-year marriage and my grandparents' forty-five-year marriage of indifference, I don’t want to be another shitty statistic.

“What would you know about that?”

“My personal life isn’t anyone’s business.” I can’t tell him that I’m tempted to get extremely personal with my brand-new stepsister, even though I should stay a thousand miles away from the little temptress.

“What personal life. I’m having another child because I’m not going to have any grandchildren. If you’re gay, it’s now the time to admit it.”

“I’m not gay. Lord, if that were the problem, I’d gladly admit it.”

“Oh goodness, son. Are you having medical problems with little Drake?”

“Fuck no. I’m not having this conversation.” I got close to her bedroom door in time to overhear her on the phone. I hung up on my father and tucked my phone back in my pocket.

“He’s my stepbrother,” she says, sounding indignant. What the fuck did that mean? What did her mother have planned for me? “Are you crazy?” she hollers. The call ended, and I knocked on the door to check on her and unnerve my guest.

However, the second the door opens, I’m floored by her outfit, and she’s got me by the balls. All I can do is ask if she’s okay. When she brings up my sex life, I lie to see her reaction. My little stepsister wasn’t happy when she believed I’d have women riding my dick. That’s good, but she won’t be either because she can’t be trusted. For now, my hand will just have to do the job.

Walking to my bedroom, I was both pissed and aroused. All I knew was my investigator would be doing more than looking into a client this week. I wanted answers, and I wanted them yesterday.

Sleep eluded me as I typed emails, pulled records, and stayed up pacing while thinking about the girl down the hall. How could I be so damn attracted to her? Slamming my laptop shut, I try to tuck myself in bed, but all thoughts end up on the wet guest. I grumble and then turn onto my side, ignoring my ten-inch, thick beast between my legs like I have all my life, and let the weight of my day finally let me fall asleep.

As soon as the sun was up, I ignored the fatigue and went to do what I wanted from the moment I got home. Slipping on my swim trunks, I took the stairs two at a time and went out back to the pool area and turned on the heater. Summer in Chicago could be so finicky. Yes, today’s high was supposed to be eighty, but it wasn’t going to be that until twelve, and it’s only six am which meant, the water was a cool seventy-five. It didn’t matter either way because my body needed that exercise, or at least that’s what I told myself.

Diving in, I raced across the pool for an hour, letting the sun rise high in the sky. By the time I finally called it quits, it had to be well after nine. My body burned from all the laps I managed to pull off.

The second I climbed out, my pool guy arrived. “Hello Ernesto, how are you?”
