“Right back. I’ll just get dressed. You look lovely today, by the way.” He smiled and got to his feet and then moved in my direction, put his lips to mine, his hand in my hair, and he kissed me with a sweep of his tongue, too, quick before he disappeared into the bathroom. As he walked away, I stared at his sexy and muscled back, at his really nice derriere. And then my face crash-landed into my palm.

Oh my God. I have to tell him. I have to tell him that if he doesn’t fuck me, and really soon … I’m dead.

I stared down at the food in front of me and as good as it looked and smelled, I couldn’t bring myself to take a bite. I heard a little ‘coooo’ sound, reminiscent of what a purring owl might sound like. Chili.

“Hi, Chili bean!” I said, enthusiastically, and genuinely felt affection for the adorable little pink fluffball with the big eyes and short bunny-like ears who was looking at me kind of adoringly.

The bedroom door burst open and there was Ollie, running full speed toward me with a big smile on his face. He looked so much like both his father and his mother. Zane’s curls. His mother’s bright green eyes. Zane’s smile. I got to my feet in time for him to tackle me with a hug. I sat back down, feeling a little unsteady with the force of the affection and he climbed up on to my lap.

“Tanya, Tanya, are we a family now?” He reached up and lifted my hair back, kind of roughly in his excitement to examine my ear.

Oh shit.

“We are!” He clapped his hands.

“Um…” What the heck could I say?

“Did you get my present? Did you write stories already? What about the flowers, did you like the flowers? Daddo said they bloomed, they actually bloomed and that’s just…just ahhhh-mazing!”

He was talking a mile a minute and gosh, he was cute. Chubby dimpled hands, dimples on his cheeks. A mop of dark curls and wearing overalls with a t-shirt that had some strange ferocious-looking lion-like animal growling on the front. He wore little beige boots that were reminiscent of construction boots without laces.

“I absolutely loved your present. Thank you so very much. And the flowers? Beautiful. I was in awe, Ollie. Truly. They don’t have flowers like that where I come from.”

“Oh, what, what what is that?” He pointed with a gasp at Chili. “Is that a baby fuschialala-viscacha? I never saw a baby one before!”

How did he get that mouthful out so quickly?

“It is. His momma died in the back yard last night and he was on her back, so we, your dad and I, we’ve been looking after him. He’s just too little and too new to survive on his own, so…”

Zane was coming out. Ollie was staring at the cage with his mouth open.

“Hello, Daddo. Can I hold it? Can I take it out?” Ollie was moving toward the cage.

“Hello, son. Yes. Carefully, though. You know how destructive fuschillas can be. This one is only days old and he’s already an escape artist, so be careful and watchful of him. He’s only here because Tanya gave me the same face you give sometimes when you’re trying to play on my soft side.”

Ollie snickered. “What soft side?” He gave me an exaggerated wink and immediately began working on the locks and in a few simple hand movements, had the cage open. Chili pounced and landed on Ollie’s face, grabbing onto his bangs and dangling.

A fit of giggles burst from him as he caught Chili and held him in his hand. “Oh, you’re fast! And so small and---"

“Cute?” Zane cut in. “Tanya says he’s so stinkin’ cute.”

Ollie took a whiff of Chili and gave me a confused look. “He doesn’t have a smell.”

“It’s a figure of speech where I come from.” I shrugged.

Zane smiled. He stood there in black suede trousers with a ribbed stitching pattern all over them in a patchwork sort of design and they were… tight. And a royal blue silky button-down shirt. Only the bottom three buttons were done up. He had the sleeves pushed up to his forearms. His chest. Whoa. He was wearing the shoes he had on the day I met him. My throat went dry as my eyes wandered over all that was him.

He smiled at me as his eyes traveled from my eyes to my bare toes and then back up again, giving me a taste of my own ogling medicine. And then he smiled at me like he was picturing me naked.

“Did you have a good visit with Granddad?” Zane asked Ollie, but his eyes were still on me.

“I did. But I couldn’t wait to get home. And we’re a family now, right?” Ollie asked, wiggling and giggling as Chili ran up his shoulder and behind his neck, then ran down the neck hole of Ollie’s t-shirt, making the boy jerk and laugh loud, obviously being tickled.
