“I… it’s sort of embarrassing. I was fired and blackballed. I had been heading home when my car broke down. Luckily, I ran into Bishop Love and he offered me a job and a ride back to Cali.

“I’m now a part of his crew and I’m on his tour. Not what a Walden girl should do, so yeah, the parents are mad at me right now.”

“First, don’t think we’re not coming back to the blackballing and firing business. Second, I heard about the pictures and meant to call you sooner, I’ve just been busy with work.”

I’m not surprised. Reminisce isn’t one to follow the gossip rags. She probably has no idea who Bishop is in the first place.

“You didn’t need to waste your time. We weren’t seeing each other when those pictures came out and the rumors started.”

“Ah, now we’re getting to it. You’re seeing this guy? No wonder they looked like their heads were going to explode.

“Saga, don’t worry about them folks. You have done everything they’ve expected of you and then some for as long as I can remember. This is your life. Live it,” my sister says firmly.

I wish I could be more like my younger sister. She has craved her own path since day one. That’s expected of her. I don’t have that luxury.

“Rem, I want to throw caution to the wind. He makes me happy. I haven’t felt this way in… ever.

“The truth is, when I’m with him, I don’t feel smothered. I feel free to breathe and take life by the horns. I don’t think Mommy and Daddy would understand how I feel, so I’ve pushed it to the back of my mind.

“I don’t want to deal with it, so I’m ignoring it. I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. For now, I just want to be happy,” I say.

“You know me. I’m all for your happiness. I say, do you.

“I really want to see those pictures now. Ugh, if not for this huge case, I’d be all in your business. Alas, I’m going to mind the business that pays me. I have to go, sis. I love you.”

I laugh. I know my sister. She’ll forget about those pictures before we hang up. She’s going to mind her business.

“I love you too.”

CHAPTER 20

Atlanta

Bishop

I’ve written two songs during the last few days. One of which I’m not ready to share with the world. I don’t know if that one will make the album at all.

But this one. This one, I want Saga to hear. I want the world to hear it. Spending the last two days locked away in a hotel with her has been amazing and life-affirming.

I know what I want and I know who I want it with. I’ve found what I’ve been missing all this time. Well, before the end with Bev.

“Atlanta, Atlanta, Atlanta, you’ve been so good to me. I have something extra special I want to sing for you tonight. Are you ready?” I call out to the crowd.

While they go wild, I turn to look at Saga waiting in the wings. She’s perched on a stool I insisted she sit on during the concert. She tilts her head and gives me that beautiful smile.

“I’m going to play this one on my own tonight. I haven’t shared it with the guys just yet. It’s a bit near and dear to my heart,” I say as the crowd dies down.

I start with the first few cords and pause. The crowd goes crazy. My heart’s pounding.

I wipe my sweaty palm on my jeans. I didn’t think I’d be this nervous to play this one. Reaching for my water, I take a sip and swallow down my nerves.

Here goes nothing.

Saga

He looks so nervous. I’ve never seen him like this on stage. I lean forward in my seat, holding my breath.

He fixes Lucie and starts to play again. The crowd here is so loud. They’re going crazy before he opens his mouth. I’m pulled in by his very first words.

I have something I need to tell you

Hush… give me a second to get this out

When I say this, I want you to really hear me

It’s crazy; I’ve said the words a million times before

They’ve just never meant the same as they do when I say them to you

Come dance with me as I sway you to the music

Say the words with me; I see them in your eyes

This comes from my heart

Here goes…

I’m in love with you

I love you so much I don’t know what to do

There’s so much other shit I could say, but at the end of the day—

the fact is… I love you—

Now everybody knows…

I’m in love with you

I love you so much I don’t know what to do

Everyone has something to say, but at the end of the day—

the fact is… I love you—
